Algarve Cane Basket

Cane basket, handmade by local artisans in southern Portugal. These baskets are entirely handmade by an experienced basket weaver from Algarve, Portugal. Traditional design with a round lid, that opens easily. A piece that is both light and smooth to the touch. Handmade from Portuguese cane (Arundo Donax).

This basket is known in the north of Portugal as the “Octopus Basket” because it was used to carry fresh octopus from the region of Algarve, in the south (where the baskets are traditionally from), up to the north of Portugal. This design was immortalised back in the 1960s by the french singer and actress, Jane Birkin when she began to use it as a fashion accessory.
